A VIBRANT CITY ON ITS WAY BACK
I have been a longtime fan of the Detroit Red Wings. I decided to make a pilgrimage to Detroit in 2017 to see two home games in the Joe Louis Arena… the final year the team was to play in that building before they tore it down to build the massive Little Caesars Arena a few blocks away.
I didn’t know what I was expecting to find in this city. I had only heard of the auto industry boom and bust… what was and now, supposedly, isn’t. What I found was a city that was keenly aware of its troubles, but the people who remain are proud and determined to not give up on their home. The culture is so vibrant, with incredible museums, night life, restaurants and coffee shops. There are still many problems, but from an outsiders point of view, the signs are all pointing to the emergence of a new renaissance. I certainly hope that’s the case!
